“This isn’t just about a house—it’s about building something that will last for generations.”
For Twanda Johnson and her husband Luther, home has always meant more than four walls—it’s where love, family, and faith come together. The couple, both deeply rooted in their community and dedicated to raising their family with strong values, have long dreamed of a home that reflects their care and commitment. But for years, they’ve lived in a cramped and deteriorating 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom house that barely fits their needs. “We make it work because we love each other,” Twanda said. “Everyone deserves their own space.”
Luther shares a particularly close bond with young Jayvion. “They’re cousins, but it’s more like a father-son relationship,” Twanda explained. “Jayvion looks up to Luther so much, and they love building things together. That kind of connection has helped keep our family strong.” Twanda’s niece Niya, adds even more personality to the household. “She brings so much life into our home. Even though she doesn’t have a bedroom of her own, she stays optimistic and keeps us laughing. We have a special bond.”
Everything changed when they were accepted into the Habitat for Humanity program. “When we found out, we felt a huge sense of relief and hope,” Luther shared. “It was like a burden lifted. For once, we could see a future with real stability.” The couple quickly began putting in their sweat equity hours, helping to build not only their future home but the homes of other families in need. “It’s been such a rewarding experience,” said Twanda. “We’re not just building walls—we’re building a life. The classes have taught us so much about being responsible homeowners. It’s empowering.”
As they look ahead, the Johnsons can finally envision a life rooted in peace and possibility. “Our Habitat home means freedom,” Twanda said. “Freedom from worry, from instability, from feeling like the floor is going to fall through beneath us. We’ll have the space to grow, the safety to breathe, and the ability to make lasting memories together.”
