“My house will be my safe haven.”
Melissa Curry is a devoted single mother who has spent the past 15 years working as a certified nursing assistant. As a mother to her eight-year-old son, Zander, she is dedicated to building a brighter future for their small but close-knit family. Outside of work, Melissa loves spending time with her son, who enjoys riding his bike, playing football, visiting arcades and jump parks, and collecting superheroes and LEGO sets.
For much of her life, Melissa has lived with family. After her mother’s home required extensive remodeling due to mold, Melissa and Zander moved in with extended family, who welcomed them with open arms. Although she is grateful for their support, space is limited, and she and Zander have always shared a bedroom. As he grows, Melissa hopes to give him the independence, privacy, and room to thrive that he deserves. With rising rental costs, finding an affordable home that provides long-term stability has been challenging.
When Melissa learned she had been accepted into the Habitat for Humanity Homeownership Program, she was overcome with emotion and gratitude. This opportunity represents the chance to create a home of their own and build a more secure future together.
Melissa looks forward to Zander finally having his own bedroom, decorating it however he chooses, and having more room to play and grow. She also dreams of furnishing her own living room and kitchen and eventually transforming her backyard into a personal oasis. For Melissa, a Habitat home means stability, freedom, and safety. As she puts it, “I am building because I want a better future for us.”
