Homeowner Bio: The Shannon Family

“Habitat for Humanity is a voice of reason, a vision for hope and making beautiful moments become a reality for a better future for yourself and your family generations.”

Falana Shannon is a Youth Specialist at Ready for Life Inc. and has worked there for over seven years. She is on her journey towards homeownership with Habitat and will be the first of seven siblings to become a homeowner in her family. For 10 years of her life, Falana has lived in 40 different foster homes, attended 12 different schools, and faced many hardships. Despite all of her difficulties, she continues to remain positive and motivated to reach her goals. “I will finally break the barriers of poverty and hardships,” she tells us. She is ready for permanent stability in her life and not having to worry about increasing rent prices.

Like many families in our community, Falana has experienced extreme rent prices with landlords who provide substandard living conditions. So far, she has had three roofs collapse on her in her home, including one that hit her in the head. On top of that, she has encountered mold, electrical, and A/C issues in her home. Because of this, Falana took the first step in bettering her future and applied to the Habitat program. “All of the faith, consistency, and hard work in the Habitat program will be worth it. It will teach me responsibility, but it will mean HOME. I never knew what it was like to have a place called home.”

In her new forever home, Falana is most looking forward to stability, comfort, and growth. “I am building because I have dreams to inspire someone just like me and to give people and myself hope for a better future.”

For anyone who is interested in applying to the Habitat program, Falana offers these words of wisdom: “Believe that the impossible is POSSIBLE! Believe in yourself, have faith not fear! Take a chance on life, overcome all the hardships, and you will see the light and the sunshine. Be encouraged. Stay encouraged.” For more information on how to begin the application process, please visit our Apply Page on our website.

“My house will be my safe place, my refuge, my place of peace, and my serenity garden of love.”
