Homeowner Bio: The Searles Family

“Being able to take care of my family is most important to me and an affordable habitat home will help me be successful.”

April Searles, a Title Processor at Sunset Title Services, is working towards her dream of owning a forever home with Habitat. She is a single mother to three children: her 21-year-old son, Gaven, and her 14-year-old twin daughters, Avery and Zoey. “Avery and Zoey live for Volleyball,” April tells us. “They are always playing it and were on the school’s volleyball team. Gaven loves anything with computers and football.” April describes her children as smart, good-hearted, funny, and loving.

Like many other families in our community, the Searles’ have experienced outrageous rent increases which has left them to struggle financially. The home they are renting is falling apart and their landlord only does the minimum to fix any issues. Getting accepted into the Habitat Homeownership program was a major relief for April, as she will be able to provide a safe and spacious home that will be affordable for the family to live and grow in.

“I am looking forward to feeling secure and safe with my family in my new home. It will be nice to not have to worry about rent going up and inflation as much. It will also be nice that the house is new, and as long as we take care of it, it will take care of us.”

One of the major components of the Habitat program is sweat equity. “I love doing the sweat equity hours,” April explains. “I learn new things that I have applied in my everyday life, get to meet new wonderful people, and just have all around fun at the events.” If you are interested in volunteering alongside our homeowner candidates, like April, you can visit our Volunteer Page on our website for more information.

“Habitat for Humanity is one of the best things I’ve ever been apart of and I am so grateful for this program.”
