“My house will be my shelter, my safe space, and my sanctuary.”
Priscilla Reed, a determined and resilient woman, is embracing a new chapter in her life with the help of Habitat for Humanity. Priscilla is a veteran who served ten years in the Army and is this year’s Veterans Build homeowner partner. After experiencing homelessness for four months following the COVID-19 pandemic—despite paying rent on time for five years—she struggled to find an affordable and stable place to live. “It was depressing to have a paycheck and still be unable to find a decent place to live,” Priscilla recalls. The hardship forced her to rent a storage unit for her belongings and make the heartbreaking decision to give up her two beloved dogs, who no longer had a yard to play in.
When she learned she was accepted into the Habitat for Humanity program, Priscilla was overwhelmed with emotion. “At first, I was in disbelief, but then relief took over because I knew I would finally be able to own a home!” she shares. The thought of having a place to call her own, without the fear of a landlord selling it from under her, fills her with hope and peace. “I will no longer have to deal with apartments, and I’ll have peace in my soul knowing that this is mine,” she adds.
For Priscilla, homeownership through Habitat for Humanity represents more than just having a house—it’s about creating a lasting legacy. “My house will be my shelter, my safe space, and my sanctuary,” she proudly states. Moving into her Habitat home will be a momentous occasion. “I am most looking forward to unpacking for the last time!” she exclaims. More than anything, she wants to leave something behind for her children, ensuring that they have security even when she is gone.
