Homeowner Bio: The Perez-Santiago Family

“I am building because my children and generations to come deserve it.”

Nisbel Perez-Santiago, a dedicated single mother, is on a mission to create a stable and secure home for her two children, Edwin (12) and Taina (9), and a third child who is on the way and will arrive in October. Living a humble and simple life, Nisbel’s family finds joy in the little things—video games, reading, visiting aquariums, and enjoying arcades. However, the rising costs of rent and basic living essentials have made it challenging for her to keep up. Additionally, with her son being autistic and their neighborhood not being the safest, outdoor play isn’t always an option. “I would love for him to be able to play outside, but our neighborhood not being the safest makes it difficult,” Nisbel shares.

Finding out she was accepted into the Habitat for Humanity program was a moment of immense relief and excitement for Nisbel. “I was excited to be able to participate in such a great program and to learn things I should have learned a decade ago,” she recalls. Nisbel’s journey with Habitat is not just about building a house, but about gaining valuable knowledge and skills.

Nisbel envisions a much more peaceful life with a Habitat home. She looks forward to having a space that is truly theirs, where her children can feel safe and be themselves. “My house will be a safe haven,” she declares. The stability and sense of security that come with homeownership are what she and her children deserve.

For Nisbel, home is where her children can be themselves, free from the worries and uncertainties of their current living situation. “Habitat for Humanity is a blessing,” she says, acknowledging the transformative impact the program has on families like hers. The opportunity to have a stable home means that she can focus on providing a better future for her children, ensuring they grow up in an environment that supports their growth and happiness.
