Homeowner Bio: The Mitchell Family

“Habitat is not just an organization that care for you as a homeowner, but they also care for you as family.”

Keyonda Mitchell is a dedicated VPK teacher at The Sprout Academy, and is on her journey towards homeownership with Habitat. She is a single mother to three wonderful children: Jaylin (19), Khylee (10), and Tristan (3). Keyonda’s life revolves around her kids, and she cherishes every moment spent with them. From enjoying books and playing video games with Khylee to engaging in creative play with Tristan, who loves bubbles and Legos, family time is precious. “My children are the most important in my life,” says Keyonda.

Living conditions for Keyonda and her family have been challenging. “I am a single mom of three and it’s very challenging trying to make sure they have their basic needs. At times I honestly don’t know how I’m going to provide for them,” she admits. This struggle to provide stability and security for her children led Keyonda to apply for the Habitat for Humanity program. When she received the news of her acceptance, it was a moment of overwhelming gratitude. “I had just got into a car accident the week before Thanksgiving, so I wasn’t in the best spirit. When I got the call, all I could do was cry and thank God for my ups and downs,” she recalls.

Keyonda is enthusiastic about the learning opportunities that come with earning sweat equity and working on build sites. “I expect to learn how to become better at maintenance and rebuilding,” she says. This hands-on experience is not just about constructing a house but about building a foundation of knowledge that will empower her to take care of her home and provide a secure environment for her children.

The prospect of moving into her own home fills Keyonda with hope and excitement. “I am looking forward to taking the key and turning the door knob to a new beginning and fresh start of life,” she shares. She envisions her future with a sense of peace, with her beautiful children running around in the backyard, enjoying each other’s company. “My house will be my safe place for myself and my children,” she affirms, highlighting the profound impact that having a stable home will have on their lives.
