Homeowner Bio: The Mitchell Family

“I imagine myself raising my boys in a home that is OURS. Growing old and passing the house down to them. Hopefully one day they’ll raise their family in OUR home.”

Pamela Mitchell is a Teaching Assistant at Discovery Learning Center for children 18 to 24 months who has a strong passion for helping special needs children and families. She is a single mother to her sons David (age 13) and Kingston (age 5). The boys both love video games and as a family, they all love music. David recently taught himself how to code and really enjoys it. Kingston is a YouTube lover and loves to record himself “making content”.

Both of Pamela’s sons have medical issues, but she is grateful they are both healthy. David struggles with asthma and Kingston was diagnosed with Erbs Palsy at birth. Erbs Palsy has left Kingston with damaged nerves, resulting to little to no movement or feeling in his left arm and a tad bit lazy left eye. He’s been going to Occupational Therapy since he was three months old, but has to take breaks so he doesn’t get burnt out. “My life is pretty busy,” Pamela says, “but I wouldn’t it trade it for anything.”

“Being accepted into the program has been a dream come true,” Pamela says. She was at work when she got the acceptance call and she began to cry. Her students all came over and gave her big hugs and congratulated her. The family is very excited to finally have their own house. “David is excited that he can contribute with getting grades. It’s a little over Kings head what’s going on, but he’s pumped to have a home for us.”

During her time in the Habitat program, Pamela is looking forward to learning how to fix things. “I’m a girly girl, but I don’t mind getting dirty – especially if it can save me money!”
