“We will be able to stand confidently in the fact of knowing we made this happen as a family.”
For Garrett Laplante and his fiancée Cheyenne Shafer, family means everything. With their two children—7-year-old Ryder and 4-month old Lillian—the couple is working hard to provide the kind of stable, loving home they both lacked growing up. Now, thanks to Habitat for Humanity, that dream is coming into focus. “We are a strong family unit,” Garrett shared. “We love and care for one another immensely… We love our kids more than life itself and want to provide nothing but the best for them—physically, mentally, and emotionally.”
Life hasn’t always been easy for Garrett and Cheyenne. Both experienced instability in their childhood homes, and more recently, Cheyenne endured unsafe living conditions with a mold-infested apartment and a landlord who refused to make necessary repairs. “We lost everything and had to start over,” she explained. Since then, the family has been making do in a cramped apartment with ongoing issues. “We would love nothing more than to provide the best for our children and give them a stable, loving household.”
The couple was overjoyed to learn they were accepted into the Habitat for Humanity program. “Ecstatic, grateful, overwhelmed with joy, speechless, blessed,” the couple described their reaction. With sweat equity hours ahead, they’re eager to gain the skills and knowledge
to care for their new home. “It will provide security and shelter…relief of knowing we have a place to call our own,” Garrett said. Most importantly, their children will finally have bedrooms of their own—spaces they can personalize and grow up in.
For Garrett and Cheyenne, this home represents more than just bricks and mortar. “Our house will be our pride and joy,” Garrett said. “We will be able to stand confidently in the fact of knowing we made this happen as a family.” Their story is a reminder of what’s possible when people are given the opportunity to build something better. As Garrett put it, “Dreams can come true if you just have the courage to pursue them.”
