Homeowner Bio: The Hamel Family

“I am building because I want to prove to my children hard work to accomplish a goal is always achieved by dedication and sacrifice.”

Melissa Hamel has worked as a Material Specialist for Allegiant for the past 2 years. She is a single mother of 6 children: 17- year- old Mya, 14- year-old Cheyenne, 11- year- old Isaiah, 10- year-old Jaxson, 8- year-old Emmalynn, and 6- month- old Laylani. Mya enjoys cooking and fashion. Cheyenne loves to play volleyball and care for her siblings. She enjoys supporting her brother, Isaiah, at football. Isaiah has been playing football for 3 years now! Jaxson is an animal lover and has a passion for exploring. He also enjoys playing video games with his siblings, Isaiah and Emmalynn. Emmalynn is more creative, and loves playing with her baby sister, Laylani. Laylani is growing into her sweet personality. As a family, they are very disciplined and structured. They love spending time together and helping each other grow into the best versions of themselves.

The family of 7 is currently living in a 3 bed/ 2 bath home, leaving very little space for anyone. Melissa’s oldest son sleeps on the couch, and as the kids grow older, they all require more privacy and space than they have right now. Melissa also wants a backyard space for her family to play in, but the apartment only has a parking lot, as well as being very close to the road. “We have out grown this place and need much more personal space, storage and a yard to play in” explains Melissa.

After getting accepted into the Habitat program, Melissa imagined a life of stability. “I am going to be able to give my children the security that if they ever need, the door will be opened to the even after they grow up and life gets hard” Melissa tells us. She explains how excited she is to be able to give her children their own space and take advantage of the new space they now have access to. “I am excited to decorate it during the holidays and having a yard for them to experience being children outside together” she expresses. Melissa worked hard to get accepted into this program. “Habitat for Humanity is a god sent program that great people work at, helping families have stable and safe spaces they can call their own” conveys Melissa. She can’t wait to watch her family grow and offer them a forever home.

“I am building because I had to fight to get here and want them to know your life is what you make it and you don’t have to settle.”
