“With a Habitat home, I imagine my life being organized, secure, and stable.”
Florencita Bernardez is a Paralegal at Bay Area Legal Services, where she has worked for the past two years. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from New York City College of Technology before she and her daughter made the move to Florida in search of better opportunities. Florencita has always been someone who pushes herself and works hard for the things she wants to achieve, and she is grateful to have a strong support system cheering her on along the way.
Her greatest supporter is her daughter, Skylah, 9, who fills their home with creativity and joy. Skylah loves singing, dancing, reading, swimming, playing board games, doing arts and crafts, and baking cookies. “I’m constantly in awe of how intelligent, creative, intuitive, and compassionate she is,” Florencita shares. As a single parent, Florencita draws strength from her daughter’s unwavering trust.
Their living situation has been challenging for quite some time. Florencita and Skylah share a one-bedroom apartment that has become increasingly overcrowded. As Skylah grows, the lack of privacy and personal space has made daily life more difficult. They’ve made many sacrifices while living with relatives, and although the situation isn’t perfect, they remain grateful to have a roof over their heads.
When Florencita learned she was accepted into the Habitat program, her reaction was immediate and clear: “My life is about to change!” She looks forward most to seeing Skylah excited to be in her very own space. For Florencita, a Habitat home represents stability, security, and the foundation for an organized and rooted future. She describes her future home as blessed, happy, and warm. “Securing a home would have been more difficult without the support of Habitat for Humanity,” she says. For Florencita and Skylah, home is where the heart is.
