Homeowner Bio: The Thongchanh Family

“I am building because I want stability. A forever home my children can have.”

For Theresa Thongchanh, a single mother of four and a dedicated data analyst at ID Logistics, the dream of homeownership has always been about more than just having a place to live—it’s about giving her children the stability and peace they deserve. But the path to that dream has not been easy. “I am a breast cancer survivor as of April 2, 2024,” she shared. “Battling breast cancer for two years was one of the toughest battles I ever had to endure.” During that time, Theresa says she leaned on her children for strength. “There were plenty of sleepless nights and silent cries. But what kept me going were my children. They push me to never give up.”

Life in her current rental is far from ideal. With rising rent and limited space, Theresa and her children are feeling the strain. “My youngest either sleeps with me or on the couch. There’s no space…” she explained.

When Theresa found out she was accepted into the Habitat for Humanity program, she felt a mix of emotions: “Speechless, shocked, excited, happy, nervous—but prepared,” she said. “I love how Habitat prepares us. From maintenance tips to learning how to be a good neighbor—but my favorite has been budgeting!” she said with a smile. “They truly want to make sure we’re ready.”

As she works toward completing her new home, Theresa looks forward to the small moments that will mean so much. “I’m most looking forward to sitting in my living room, feet kicked back, telling myself, ‘I’m proud of you.’ Proud of the hard work my children and I put in. And thanking God for watching over us.”

Theresa’s home will be a “safe comfort zone,” where “love resides and memories are created.” Her story is one of courage, perseverance, and unshakable love for her family. “Don’t give up!” she urges others. “Yes, it’s hard—very hard. But if you stay focused and on track, you’ll be one step closer to your forever home.”
