Homeowner Bio: The Baker Family

“Home is where memories are made, love is given, joy and laughter is enjoyed, and a peace of mind is accepted.”

Erica Baker is the Director of De La Fontaine Montessori Trilingual School and has worked over 14 years in the Early Education field. She is a single mother to two children: her 18-year-old son, Antavion, and her 8-year-old daughter, Avionna. Antavion is currently a student at Trinity College of Florida and is studying Business and Sports Management. He plays basketball for his college team and likes to spend time with his friends and girlfriend when he has free time. Avionna loves to learn new things and is very passionate about others and their feelings. She loves to draw and creates new pictures every day. Her favorite subject is math and she loves going to water parks and theme parks.

The family of three is currently living in a 2 bedroom – 2.5 bathroom apartment. When they first moved in, Avionna shared a room with her mother. They found that there was not enough room for both of their belongings. Antavion soon got a job and gave up his room to his little sister because he knew he was not going to be home as much. Now, he sleeps in the living room. There is still not enough room for everyone’s belongings and they find it difficult to have guests over because of this. “We pray and have had many conversations on how we can’t wait until we have the opportunity to say “Get out of my room!”. As we all are very humble and faithful, we know that day is definitely more closer than we can imagine. As we walk by faith and not by sight, we are trusting the process and understand that our breakthrough is bound to happen.”

When Erica first found out that she was accepted into the Habitat program, she was overjoyed. “To some, it didn’t show on the outside, but baby on the inside there was a whole party going on within my heart as it was filled with joy, appreciation, a little relief, happiness, and much more. All I could say to myself was ‘Thank you, God’. This is the breakthrough we as a family have been praying for.” In her new forever home, Erica is looking forward to making many new memories with her family. She is also excited to watch her daughter grow her own garden.
